Follow this checklist to safely clean the basket of your pump (or similar models). Always refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions for your pump.
Preparation
- Stop the Pump:
- If your pump is automated, switch it to Service Mode or stop the schedule.
- For manual systems, press the Stop button or flip the power switch to Off to halt the pump.
- Ensure the Pump is Off:
- Verify that the water in the basket has stopped moving.
- For added safety, turn off the breaker connected to the pump.
Opening the Pump Basket
- Locate the Lid:
- Look for arrows on the pump lid indicating the direction to open it.
- Loosen the Lid:
- Tap lightly on the lid’s handles or use your hands to break the seal.
- Turn the lid in the indicated direction to open.
- Remove the Basket:
- Carefully lift out the basket.
- Avoid damaging the edges or seals.
Cleaning the Basket
- Empty Large Debris:
- Shake out any large debris like leaves and twigs.
- Rinse the Basket:
- Use a garden hose to spray off any remaining dirt or small debris.
- Avoid banging the basket against hard surfaces to prevent cracking.
- Inspect for Damage:
- Check for cracks or worn areas on the basket. Replace if damaged to prevent debris from entering the filter system.
Reassembling the Pump
- Replace the Basket:
- Align the basket’s lip with the intake valve inside the pump.
- Seal the Lid:
- Place the lid back on and hand-tighten it in the opposite direction of opening. Do not overtighten.
Restarting the Pump
- Turn the Pump On:
- Flip the power switch to On or press the Start button.
- Release Air from the System:
- Open the air release valve to let trapped air escape.
- Wait until water begins pouring out steadily.
- Close the Release Valve:
- Once the water flow stabilizes, close the valve securely.
- Check Pool Operation:
- Ensure return jets are blowing water, not air.
Tip: Regular cleaning of your pump basket prevents clogs, improves filtration, and extends the life of your pool equipment.
